Praxis is a busy centre in East London visited by over 10,000 people each year. It provides a wealth of advice and support services to migrants and refugees from all over the world, as well as a welcoming meeting place for displaced communities.
AND THAT IS WHERE PRAXIS COMES IN…
Advice
Our open access advice service is available daily, backed by health care support provided by Medicins du monde. We also work closely the local council, primary care trust and homelessness partnership to offer a joined-up support service. More info
Vocational training
We offer vocational training regularly, including a specialist language course for would-be-social-care professionals and our “Move On” intensive course for Somalis. More info
Mentoring
Through the Time Bank Mentoring Scheme we enable those newly granted refugee status to link with trained volunteer mentors from established UK communities. More info
Food, football and friendship
Each week there’s a lively mix of social, cultural and sporting activites, enabling communities to form friendships and celebrate their cultures. We have our own community café (Brochette Corner), our own football team (the Praxis Panthers) and Latin American and Central African dance groups that meet and perform regularly.
We have developed our own action learning approach to community development that enables the leaders of refugee and migrant communities to share their experiences, build solutions to their problems together and voice their concerns to policy makers.
Our long-standing partnership with the Human Right Centre of Liberia includes lobbying influential UK and European officials on human rights issues and a programme of exchange visits to support the post-civil war process of reconciliation and transitional justice.
Prison support
Our volunteer group Vamos Juntos visits and corresponds with Latin American migrants held in UK prisons, making contact with their families and liasing with the prison welfare services on their behalf.
Probation service partnership
The criminal justice system frequently deals with the UK’s most vulnerable newcomers, including people who have been trafficked. We hold outreach surgeries in probation offices in partnership with the London Probation Service, and operate a helpline for probation staff.
