The Intercultural Communication and Leadership School 29 April 2010

Micro Cosmos Intercultural project

'Micro Cosmos Intercultural' is an ICLS pilot project in East London, in partnership with Praxis Community Projects and the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations. The project is to develop leadership skills of local young people for improving intercultural cooperation and contributing to the creation of inclusive, good governance of local diversity. Young people from different ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds of East London (Tower Hamlets in particular) who have shown leadership capacity within their communities will be selected to attend a 5 day communication and leadership residential seminar, to be held in April 2010.

The main outcome of the residential seminar will be the creation of Tower Hamlets' Network of Trust, a group of young local ICLS alumni acting as leaders in the local community and bridge-builders across local divisions. They will further develop their communication and leadership skills and some of them will also engage in the development of this project under the name of 'Good Governance of Diversity' in other parts of the world.

Who can get involved?

  • Young adults aged 20 to 30 who are:

  • Coming from different social backgrounds of the local communities,

  • Demonstrating ability to act as leaders and interest to co-operate across lines of divisions,

  • Having the potential to influence attitudes and behaviour within their own community,

  • Agreeing with the ICLS principles.

The seminar program will include interactive discussion on subjects such as:

  • Identity and community

  • Analysis of the local situation and search for civic solutions

  • Leadership and emotional intelligence skills

  • Conflict resolution skills

  • Media skills (print, electronic and social)

  • Participants setting up the local Network of Trust

Partnership and cooperation possibilities with the project:

  • Active participation in the delivery of the programme;

  • Expanding the project towards other communities;

  • Creating and offering further development opportunities to the local alumni;

  • Advertising the project through your networks;

  • Direct financial contribution or facilitating financial contribution by third parties;

  • Any other support that can facilitate the program expansion in the UK and worldwide.
