Illegal Lives – Exploring issues in working with undocumented migrants 31 March 2010

A conference from Praxis Community Projects

Undocumented migrants live in a shadowy world, part of our society yet excluded from many areas of life.

The traditional stereotype of the undocumented migrant, a single person in the UK for economic reasons, probably working as a cleaner or car washer, is true of many, but the undocumented community is much more diverse and includes people fleeing civil war, violence and environmental degradation, highly-qualified professionals working quietly in businesses, schools and health services, families with children in our schools, the elderly and people with disabilities.

Most of us rarely encounter the world of irregular migration and when we do we are often unsure of what to do, uncertain as to how to proceed both within the law and within professional and ethical boundaries.

Praxis has developed expertise in working with undocumented migrants over a number of years and has been funded by City Parochial Foundation and Barrow Cadbury to work on undocumented issues, providing advice and casework to large numbers of undocumented clients, working to raise awareness of issues and promoting best practice in working with this challenging client group.
