Training on working with interpreters

Our one-day course offers guidance on good practice when working with interpreters to ensure you are acting within the law and in the best interests of your client, and making the best use of resources.

The course is suitable for anyone who works with people whose first language is not English on a regular basis and wishes to develop understanding and skills to make effective use of interpreters, including professionals who have worked with interpreters before or who may be new to working with refugees and asylum seekers, or new to working in the voluntary sector.

The course is also relevant for interpreters themselves who wish to gain an understanding of their role when working within the sector.

What does the course cover?

  • The legal framework
  • The duties and responsibilities placed on service providers
  • The needs of asylum seekers and refugees
  • Good practice in working with interpreters at different stages of contact with asylum seekers and refugees
  • Cross-cultural communication
  • How to access trained interpreters
  • Current interpreting qualifications

Who should attend?

Social services and other local authority departments, police, health workers, housing providers, advice workers, legal professionals, refugee community organisations and anyone working with interpreters to provide services for non-English speakers. The course will also benefit interpreters wishing to gain a better understanding of this particular client group.
