We should all have the stability we need to build a decent life. Right now, hundreds of thousands of people are held back by immigration policies that keep them in limbo, often struggling to make ends meet, for months, years – even decades.
What needs to change? It shouldn’t take any more than five years for someone to settle in the UK, while visa fees and charges should be limited to the actual costs. Those who can’t afford to pay shouldn’t have to. Decisions on asylum applications must be made promptly. And everyone must have a simple, reliable and easily accessible way to prove their immigration status when they need to. While the system remains eye-wateringly complicated and hard to navigate, it’s imperative that everyone who needs it should have access to legal advice.
