Praxis’ group for women and their children WINGS just published their first poetry collection, a project started as a creative writing workshop. From there, the authors gained inspiration through a new language found within themselves.

We decided to host Words Apart, a public event to challenge the narrow rhetoric on us young migrants, to make sure that as many people as possible could understand our situation, and hear from our own voices that we are phenomenal.

I was 66 and had always worked, but if I had retired from my job at a local school my pension would have not been enough to live on. At Praxis they explained what options I had, and made sure I could escape destitution and retire.

In the UK thousands of people are prevented from working. After fleeing their countries, they took refuge here. As soon as they arrive, they want to build their new lives, but immigration rules don’t allow them to work until the Home Office grants them refugee status.

I came to the UK in 1973, but because of Windrush I became homeless and got charged £54000 for my cancer treatment. With Praxis I could speak with the media about my situation: it felt like a roller coaster, but it worked.

Two years ago I lost my job because of issues with my immigration status. I felt like I was facing a wall, I had no hope in front of me, I could only think about my problems. Thanks to Praxis this is now part of my past.

I was a victim of Windrush. With no papers to prove that I was legal in the UK, I couldn’t work or have a bank account and was homeless for years. After Praxis helped me it felt like I was coming alive again.

This statement responds to The Observer article detailing the Home Office's plans to gather information on non-UK rough sleepers through homelessness charities through an initiative known as the Rough Sleeper Support Service (RSSS).

On 2 July Praxis housing project won an award for the innovative and effective way it supports migrant families and women at risk of homelessness and destitution.

On 17 June we will walk together alongside thousands of people supporting access to free, high quality legal advice in the UK.

Praxis housing project, hosting migrant women and families in eight houses across London in collaboration with Commonweal housing, is one of the finalists for the World Habitat Awards.

We are extremely excited and proud to announce that Praxis has been chosen by The Guardian and The Observer as a beneficiary of their annual Charity Appeal, for our work bringing the Windrush scandal and the Home Office injustices to light.

The government’s apology to 18 people from the Caribbean who were wrongfully detained and removed from the UK as part of the Windrush scandal is a step in the right direction, but rings rather hollow given the true scale and nature of the underlying problems.

This has been an exciting time to be at Praxis - we have been at the centre of exposing the Windrush scandal and the impact of the ‘hostile environment’ on people who have lost their jobs, homes and like ‘Albert Thomson’ been denied vital medical treatment because the Home Office refused to recognize their lawful residence.
