Exactly one year ago, the inspiring members of our youth group Brighter Futures hosted ‘Challenging the Narrative’, an amazing event where they used poetry, art installations and panel discussions to challenge the narrow rhetoric on young migrants.

Members of the group for mothers WINGS worked with Irene Taylor Trust and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra to put down in words and music messages for their children, to carry with themselves for the rest of their lives.

Using creativity as a tool to challenge negative perception of migrants in the UK, this collection is the summation of a series of workshops focussing on the impact of COVID19 on the world from a young migrants’ perspective, and how the world needs to change for the better.

When Covid19 hit, Jeremiha lost his job and only source of income. For months he had to rely on charities to feed their children, often going hungry while debt was mounting, because of unfair immigration policies.

I imagine a world where migrants and refugees are not dehumanised or subjected to a “hostile environment”, but instead are treated with humanity, compassion and fairness.

Imagine a vase filled with different flowers

It is full of vibrant colours

Imagine a rose without thorns

And imagine that all flowers can be like a sunflower

I said I am waiting/Waiting to see

The walls of race/Falling

The pillars of hates/Crumbling

The voices of guns/Falling silence

We stand with the Black Lives Matter movement, and the fight against racism. This must end. We must learn. We must listen. And we must work together to combat racism and discrimination.

When I get worried, or when my son asks me not to go to work because he’s scared that I will die, I remember: if I don’t do my job, we won’t beat the virus.

Advocating for a world where we can all live in safety

To protect our staff and service users from Covid-19 we have, with regret, taken the decision to temporarily suspend our usual group activities as well as drop-in advice session on a Thursday and to close our doors to drop-in service users.
